Are you a fitness role model for your kids?

One of the greatest joys I have as a trainer is to watch the children of my clients  grow up with exercise in their homes. It got me wondering- what kind of a role model are YOU for your children? Do you exercise on a regular basis? Or, sit on the couch like a slug? Do you talk positively about exercise, or complain about how much it hurts, or how hard it is?  Do you complain about being fat in front of your children? Or, do you diet restrictively, which teaches them that some food is bad and some food is good? Just askin’ the questions…. hoping to make YOU think. While you are thinking about exercise, eating well, being a good […]

Exciting things happening at Personal Best (exciting to me anyway!)

Just got back from a wonderful trip to Italy. Saw no evidence of the classic mediterranean diet! Every meal- at least the typical restaurant meals we ate- were filled with meats, cheeses, white bread, white pasta and wine.  (Very few vegetables except tomatoes) What a combo….All the foods that I generally caution my clients to eat in extreme moderation, I ate every day, every meal. But I did not gain any weight! What’s the secret? You’ll have to wait as I will be writing more about what I like to call “The Italian Experiment” soon… but for now- two quick announcements…. My ebook “Getting Golf Ready- A Woman’s Guide to Golf  Fitness” is in it’s final editing stages. What started […]

Building a Foundation for Fitness Success

There’s an old saying that I always come back to… “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink.” When it comes to personal training, this is perhaps my biggest frustration. I can create the best, safest, most effective exercise program, but if my clients don’t do it, then what good is it? About 20% of my clients have difficulty  getting on track and staying on track. It does not matter what I say, what I do, how I nag, whether I call, email or stop by, if the client can not find the self motivation and self care to help themselves, there’s nothing I can do. Many people have many excuses for not exercising. Some […]

Great Golf Website for Women

Tiger Woods was one of my golf heroes. I guess I should’ve known that you can’t rely on men with money and power to have morals too.  What a shame! But, despite Tiger Woods’ crash and burn, despite how Tiger obviously showed a total disrespect for his wife, his kids, and marriage in general, I’m still hopeful that golf will continue to grow, and especially for women. My goal this year- to find a WOMAN Golf hero and continue to promote golf fitness for the average golfer, not just the pros.  Happily, I will be writing for a new website, www.golfgurls.com this upcoming year.  Check it out for the latest info on golf, fitness,  golf tips and camaraderie. Golf is just a few […]

Group Personal Training, Bootcamps and more

From what everyone keeps boo-hooing about, the economy is taking a downturn. Sometimes I feel like we are just making it worse with all the negativity and doom and gloom-convincing ourselves the sky is going to fall? But, my opinion notwithstanding, things are changing. I think it is key to buckle down and not spend in excess, but the ONE place it is a grave error to cut back on is self care- especially exercise and healthy eating. I have found in the past that the second that we feel economic hardship, the first thing that goes is the gym membership or personal training expenses, when, in reality, these are the times we MOST need to exercise and eat well in order to combat […]
