As always, I would like to share some updates on the latest fitness information obtained from recently published articles.
A recent study discussed in “FitBits”, an online newsletter published by Exercise Etc., once again proved the fantastic benefits of Strength Training. The study, although small in participants, showed a significant increase in energy expenditure- 327kcals- in a 24 hour period post-strength training. Most of the increase in energy expenditure occured immediately following the strength training session, which consisted of 4 sets of 10 exercises- quite a bit of work. This brings up another point- to really make a dent in calories and change your physical appearance and strength- you must do significant weight training for all major muscle groups. Not just light weights for a few select bodyparts! Listen up ladies!
And speaking of strength training and women, ACE, the American Council on Exercise, recently evaluated Curves for Women, a ” one -stop spot” for strength and cardio exercise- the largest fitness franchise in the world. Their study showed that the Curves workout is time efficient, and will give you a low to moderate intensity workout-ideal for new exercisers. For active women, this workout is just not enough- something most personal trainers already knew. The workout results in a relatively LOW calorie expenditure,163-184 kcals, and researchers found that many women may even be burning fewer calories because they do more chatting than exercising! Finally, while Curves has done a great job attracting the non- exerciser, the study pointed out that many of the staff are not adequately trained in the principles of fitness, and that the machines are not adjustable, nor can the workload (weight lifted) be increased- two absolute essentials for safety and effectiveness. Once again, this study points out that there is NO single exercise experience that is appropriate for every woman or every man. Individual exercise programs created by a personal trainer are always better than a canned, pre-packaged program.
